Intuition or anxiety?

#3: the nuts and bolts of "trust your gut"

Welcome to The Well Path, a weekly newsletter to help curious people create a healthier, happier and more intentional life.

💡 Trust your gut, they said

But how do you know if it’s really your gut talking, or just your anxious mind?

When we are in a state of anxiety, it can feel very challenging to differentiate between our gut and anxiety.

If you’re struggling with what feels like mixed messages on a situation or a decision in your life right now, keep reading.

  1. Intuition whispers, anxiety screams. Intuition presents as a calm, clear, and grounded feeling about a situation or decision. It won’t feel frantic, or give you the sensation that you need to take action urgently. It tends to be consistent and peaceful, even if it’s nudging you towards a difficult choice. Anxiety manifests as frantic and fearful. It often feels urgent, and you may have the feeling that you need to take action on something immediately. It feels chaotic, and its message can change rapidly.

  2. Your intuition is always there, but it may not be available to you right now. Intuition is inside all of us. It’s not something that some people have, and others don’t. We all have it. But that doesn’t mean it’s always accessible. Picture your intuition like a light at the core of you. Anxious thoughts are like cobwebs that cover over our Intuition, making it difficult to discern. To access our intuition, we need to clear the cobwebs.

  3. To recognize your intuition, build a relationship with it. It's a lot harder to accurately recognize a distant relative you see once every few years than a sibling you see daily. To recognize your Intuition with ease, you have to build a relationship with it. You can do this through meditation.By learning to notice our racing thoughts, we can detach ourselves from them. By detaching from them, we can clear them. Meditation is the tool through which we clear the cobwebs and reconnect to our Intuition. The more time you spend there, the better you get to know it, and the more obvious the counterfeits become. When in doubt, quiet your thinking mind.
