#23: Friendship is the highest form of love

Friendship is unnecessary

In last week’s episode of The Well Path Podcast, I made the case that Friendship is the highest form of love.

Reflecting on the topic, I was reminded of a quote from C.S. Lewis’s book, The Four Loves:

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art... It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.”

— C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

So what makes friendship so sacred?

Unlike family (given) or romance (charged with desire and expectation), friendship is chosen—based on shared values, visions, and passions. It isn’t bound by duty or fueled by infatuation. It simply says: I see you, I know you, I’m here for you.

Anyone who has experienced the blessing of a soul-friendship will know how transformative that connection can be. It’s a space where you feel unapologetically you. Where your presence is enough. Where you can be supported, uplifted and challenged to become the best version of yourself.

In this episode, we cover:

🌱 Why friendship is the most expansive kind of love
🌀 How your friendships impact your standards
💡 How to cultivate meaningful friendships as an adult
📿 Practices for deepening connection in your inner circle

This episode is for you if:

  • You have a tendency to hyper-fixate on romantic love

  • You’re in a period of transition or pruning away of old friendships

  • You have struggled to find deep connections in your city

  • You want to become a better friend to the people in your life

💭 Closing thoughts

Questions to journal on this week:

  • Who in your life makes you feel most like yourself? What qualities do they bring out in you?

  • Are there old friendships that are calling for repair—or release?

  • Who are the friends in your life that you want to go deeper with?

And one challenge:

Forward this to a friend in your life who you feel truly seen and supported by.

That’s all for now. Thank you so much for being here.

Love, Brooke
